Even though Wednesday is the official first day of spring, temperatures drop up to 4C in the north.

Before the white stuff falls, much of Britain can expect a wet and windy start to Thursday morning.

The Environment Agency has issued four flood warnings and 71 warnings in the past 24 hours following concerns about showers.

Strong winds and heavy rain will drench southern England Wales.

Conditions are then forecast to rise towards the north and Scotland.

Looking into Thursday evening, snowfall is forecast.

Parts of Scotland will be covered today around 9:30 p.m., the weather service says.

Snow could also fall in the north of England, with ‘night frost’ likely.

Conditions will remain “wintry” on Sunday and Monday and heavy showers are possible.

A Met Office spokesperson told The Sun: ‘We are likely to see a mix of sunshine and stormy showers this weekend, with some of these showers being a wintry mix of rain, sleet, hail and snow.

“Any snowfall will generally be confined to higher elevations in the north, while lower levels will see a mix of rain, sleet and hail.

“Any snow will most likely be confined to high ground in Scotland and possibly to high ground in the far north of England.

“The main consequences for most people will be that it will feel much colder than it does now, with a return of some night frosts.”

Local flooding is “likely” in parts of southern England over the next five days.

Travel disruptions are likely while roads and properties may flood.
