From the low prices to the fast service, there’s a lot to like about British bakery chain Greggs.

But according to a former employee, it’s not just about health and happiness at the popular cafes.

Write on Redditone former employee claimed that on hot days there “must have been flies on the patties.”

Unfortunately for Greggs fans, that wasn’t the only bombshell.

The former employee added: “The potato wedges are just McCain’s seasoned wedges – we pour them from a huge bag.”

And for those looking forward to a warm sausage, bean and cheese melt on a winter’s day, there’s more bad news.

The ex-employee said: ‘This will ruin sausage and beans for you – it’s not a mix of sausage and beans. There are four sausages in each patty – one set in each corner – and then they put the beans in.”

But while there is no doubt that these are potentially damaging claims, the former employee also highlighted how the chain maintains strict hygiene standards, something that is likely to strengthen its reputation.

When a fellow Reddit user, who also claimed to have worked at the chain, noted that “staff were only allowed to wash their hands at the beginning and end of their shift,” the original poster was quick to explain how their experience was completely different.

“I didn’t get that when washing my hands, though,” said the ex-employee.

‘It was drilled so deep into us that some people were left with cracked hands.’

It comes after another Greggs employee revealed why sausage and bean melts aren’t always hot.

“Because it’s not really under a hot counter, so when it comes out of the oven it’s going to be cold, you have to be there at the right time!”

While Greggs' hot food, including its much-loved pasties, is kept in glass display cabinets, the former employee suggested flies can find their way inside.

One commenter joked: ‘That implies there is a period when they are warm, but anyone who has eaten one knows they are stone cold or molten hot. Something is going on and OP (original poster) is making some major cakes.”

The best way to guarantee you get a warm pastry straight from the oven is to show up at opening time – and if you don’t show up at the right time, there’s usually only a short wait until a new batch is baked.

In June, FEMAIL revealed how Gregg’s staff use a secret code to determine which pastries are which.

Food critic Grace Dent went inside the popular bakery’s headquarters to discover the secrets behind its tasty sausage rolls and popular melts, and how they went from local Newcastle legends to a multi-billion pound British behemoth.

For the show, which aired on Channel 5, Grace also went to a shop in Newcastle to learn what it’s like to work behind the counter at the popular bakery.

There she discovered the ‘code’ that allows employees to know which pastry is on the counter.

Because the labels face the customer, staff must be able to identify the pastry just by looking at it.
