AN environmentally-minded expert has revealed a dirt-cheap hack to avoid leaving the heating on – and it involves an item from B&Q that costs just £1.60.
The TikTok user known as '@ecosufficiency' advocates 'off grid and self-sufficient living' and has almost 225,000 followers with his tips and hacks.
The post was in response to a question from another TikToker asking: “Can you do anything about heating options to help lower the cost of living. I was thinking about terra cotta pot heaters. Thank you.”
The eco-expert started the video by saying: “So I've been trying to find out if one of these little tea light heaters made from terracotta pots will save you money than just turning on an electric heating element. connected to the grid.
B&Q is currently selling a 11.2cm diameter terracotta plant pot for just £1.58.
You'll also need some tea lights and Asda sells some pack of 100 for £3.75, which equates to 3.4p per bulb.
The stoves shown have two terracotta pots, one inside the other and held together with a metal screw.
The terracotta pots are then placed on a stand slightly above the tealight, after which the pots heat up and radiate heat.
He said: “Because tealights are so cheap, they may actually be cheaper to heat your home than just turning on your gas or electricity.”
The influencer then does the calculations to see which one is actually the cheapest.
According to his figures, one tealight contains “about 150 watts of energy.”
He added: “There is about 6 cents of heat energy in each of these tea lights.”
Although, according to his figures, if tea lights cost more than 6 cents each, it's “probably” better to just turn on the heat.
