Chelsea Handler makes fun of Jo Koy at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards

Chelsea Handler's opening monologue at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards delivered the jokes — and ex-boyfriend Jo Koy wasn't spared after his recent Golden Globes drama.

Handler, 48, subtly poked fun at Koy, 52, when she opened the show at the Barker Hangar in Santa Barbara on Sunday, January 14. After cracking a joke that drew quite a few chuckles from the audience, Handler said, “Thanks for the laughs. on that. My writer wrote it.”

Koy specifically blamed his writers when he couldn't get a laugh during his Golden Globes monologue. “Some I wrote, some people wrote,” he said on the Jan. 7 show. “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago. Do you want a perfect monologue? Quiet! You're kidding, right? I've written a few, and they make you laugh.'

The comic later said he regretted blaming it. “There are a lot of greats who make rookie moves, and that was a rookie move,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “Those writers are dope, and that was not my intention at all. They were great, they had my back, and I have to make sure I fix that, and I always will.

Handler and Koy dated for a year between September 2021 and June 2022.

Weeks later, Handler went on the “We Can Do Hard Things With Glenn Doyle” podcast and said they had reached a crossroads in their relationship.

“I love him, and he's on his own path. If I have to choose one person, I have to choose myself,” she explained. “Nobody cheated or anything like that. It just didn't work. I did everything I could to make it happen, but it didn't work. I wanted to make sure everyone knew that this is a different me. This is the first time I've ended a relationship where I felt like an adult.”

While both comedians eventually moved on, they each landed gigs this awards season. While Handler was back at the Critics Choice Awards for the second consecutive year on Sunday, Koy hosted the Golden Globes for the first time on January 7.

Swift seemed irritated by the jab as she took a sip of her drink. Koy told me later Entertainment tonight that he found the mention “cute,” adding, “I just said it's less cutaways, that's all.”

Koy did receive some support from other TV personalities.
