A Chinese military scientist who was reportedly thrown from the roof of an institute in Wuhan is at the center of mounting evidence that the Covid pandemic is the result of a lab leak.
Intelligence obtained by members of the US Senate shows that Zhou Yusen filed a patent for a Covid-19 vaccine on February 24, 2020, barely a month after China put Wuhan on lockdown due to the outbreak.
US vaccine developers told researchers it would have been impossible to generate the data mentioned in the patent so quickly — it would have taken about three months of work, meaning scientists at the Wuhan Institute for Virology were secretly working on a Covid vaccine in November, two months before Beijing told the world about the pandemic.
Zhou, who worked for the People’s Liberation Army and collaborated with scientists from Wuhan at the time of the outbreak, died under mysterious circumstances in May 2020 at the age of 54.

Scientists increasingly believe the pandemic, which claimed at least seven million lives, was caused by an accident at the Wuhan Institute, which was collaborating with the Chinese military to conduct controversial “gain of function” work aimed at increasing the infectivity of viruses.
In April 2020, The Mail on Sunday became the first mainstream media outlet in the world to reveal fears the virus had leaked from a Chinese lab after a member of Cobra, the government’s secret emergency committee, said ministers were studying intelligence about an accident at the Institute.
It was dismissed by China – and Western governments were afraid of upsetting Beijing – as a “conspiracy theory.”
Now, the Senate Health Committee report has highlighted that there was a marked increase in cases of flu-like illness in Wuhan in October and November 2019. Satellites showed an increase in parked vehicles at city hospitals.
On November 19, the security director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited the institute and addressed the leaders with “important oral and written” instructions from President Xi Jinping about “a complex and serious situation.”
Earlier this year, FBI Director Christopher Wray said that “the FBI has for some time determined that the origin of the pandemic is most likely a possible laboratory incident in Wuhan.”
And last week it was reported that three of the Wuhan scientists who genetically altered the Covid virus were the first to fall ill with it. A member of one of the researchers’ families later died.
The investigators’ case is expected to feature in previously classified material released by the U.S. Director of National Intelligence in the coming days.
