A man has been rescued after being trapped in a mine shaft for more than 24 hours in an outback town in South Australia.

The 47-year-old man from the Riverland region was reported missing to the police by his wife on Friday evening.

Police called the experienced local mine rescue team after they feared the man had fallen into one of the town's many mine shafts.

The man was found more than 24 hours after his disappearance, desperately calling for help while trapped 25 meters down a shaft at the Nine Mile Opal field.
