Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway missed this year’s royal Christmas photo after becoming infected, the family Instagram account has been shown.

Crown Prince Haakon’s wife, 50, was noticeably absent from a festive portrait shared by Det Norske Kongehuset earlier today.

The photo, taken at Kongssetra near Voksenkollen in Oslo, showed King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway with their son and grandchildren.

“Merry Christmas to everyone in the Royal Family,” the caption read.

“Unfortunately, the Crown Princess was unable to attend due to Covid.”

Mette-Marit was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. The disease, which has no known cure, causes breathing problems by causing scar tissue to form on the lungs and has forced her to slow down her hectic schedule of royal duties.

In the photo, the monarch and his wife, both 86, sit on cozy chairs by an ornate fireplace decorated with Christmas decorations.

Meanwhile, Haakon, 50, and his children are behind them.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 19, opted for a sophisticated and elegant cream blazer and black top, which she paired with charcoal gray trousers.

The young royal kept her auburn locks in a relaxed style as she stood next to her brother.

Prince Sverre Magnus, 18, looked dapper in a black suit worn with a purple tie.

The queen radiated elegance in an ivory dress, adorned with striking red jewelry – perfect for the holidays.

In 2019, Metter-Marit spoke candidly about how the disease has changed her life.

She told German television that the life-limiting condition causes her to become “exhausted more quickly than before.”

The Norwegian royal was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis just months after revealing she was suffering from debilitating dizziness.

According to Royal CentralCrown Princess Mette-Marit is taking medication to help her control the disease.

She reportedly knew about her rare lung disease for “quite some time” before going public.

‘I can decide more about my daily life and realize how good it is for me. I can just go for a walk and have more time to read, life has slowed down,” she told an interviewer.

Earlier this month, the Norwegian royal family released a new portrait ahead of Prince Sverre Magnus’ 18th birthday on December 3.

The Norwegian royal family celebrated a little earlier by posing together for the beautiful new portrait in Oslo.

Celebrating with the prince was his father and heir to the Norwegian throne. Haakon and his wife both stood next to the prince’s only sibling, Ingrid Alexandra.

The glittering snaps also featured his grandfather and King of Norway, Harald, along with his wife and the prince’s grandmother, Sonja.

Meanwhile, Mette-Marit’s mother Marit Tjessem – who recently mourned the loss of her long-time partner Magnar Alfred Fjeldvær – also appeared in the memorial photos.

The beaming prince – who is third in line to the Norwegian throne – appeared in good spirits wearing traditional attire, which he teamed with a pair of black loafers adorned with a sparkling buckle.

Much of the family wore custom fits, with the exception of King Harald, who wore a smart navy blue suit, complete with a multi-blue striped tie and black leather loafers.

The monarch stood at the center of his family, with both his wife and daughter sitting on either side of him.

The camera captured the family in their happiest circumstances, with the prince even posing for a few photos while on his knees.

WHAT IS IDIOPATHIC pulmonary fibrosis?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a condition in which the lungs become scarred and breathing becomes increasingly difficult.

It is not clear what causes it, but it usually affects people between 70 and 75 years old and is rare in people under 50.

Several treatments can help reduce the rate at which IPF worsens, but there is currently no treatment that can stop or reverse the scarring of the lungs.

The symptoms of IPF usually develop gradually and slowly get worse over time.

Symptoms may include:

  • shortness of breath
  • a persistent dry cough
  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite and weight loss
  • rounded and swollen fingertips (clubbed fingers)

There is no cure and it is very difficult to predict how long someone with IPF will survive at the time of diagnosis.

Regular monitoring over time can indicate whether the condition is worsening quickly or slowly.
