A two-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car as he stood next to his father waiting to cross the road.

The pair were on the cycle path on Stud Road in Dandenong North, Melbourne, around midday when the toddler was hit.

Police said CPR was performed on the two-year-old, but he died at the scene.

It is understood the father waited for the car to turn before crossing the road, but instead the car drove into the cycle path and hit the little boy.

The little boy’s aunt said her nephew was heading home with his father after the pair spent the day together in Cranbourne.

Emergency crews are diverting traffic at the corner of Mcfees and Stud Road.

The driver of the car stopped to help the toddler and has since been assisting police.

The police have started an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the horror accident.
