Major discount store closes its doors less than a year after opening

A major discount retailer has closed a UK branch just eight months after opening, leaving shoppers stunned.

Maxi Deals on Mill Lane, Bromsgrove, Birmingham have closed in recent days.

According to local reports, last weekend on Saturday, January 27, customers saw signs in the windows announcing that the store would be offering a 20% discount on its closing sale.

Between 12 and 15 employees will be affected by the closure, as well as the local community.

The Sun has contacted Maxi Deals for a response.

The store was less than eight months old and opened early last year after Iceland closed its Mill Lane store.

The discount supermarket closed its doors and told shoppers to go to the Iceland Food Warehouse in Bromsgrove Retail Park.

Shoppers took to Facebook to share their dismay upon hearing the news.

One user said: “Tells you a lot about the high street.”

Another said: “Crikey, I totally missed it.”

“There's nothing left in the city,” someone else said.

A fourth user said: “Bromsgrove is sad that it is no longer good to shop in the high streets.”

Several other retailers have struggled to make ends meet in recent years.

Energy costs have risen and more consumers than ever are choosing to order online instead of going to the store.

This leaves some retailers struggling with budgets and having no choice but to close stores to cut costs.

Struggling fashion brand Superdry has said it is exploring various “cost-saving options” as it considers a major restructuring including store closures and job cuts.

Homebase closed a store last year, leaving just 93 stores since its acquisition by Hilco Capital in 2018.

Competitor Poundstretcher closed several stores last year, but also opened new stores in closed Wilko stores.

Boots revealed it would close 300 stores over the next year as part of plans to develop its brand.

Banks have also announced the closure of several branches.

Barclays will begin pulling down the shutters at fourteen locations in England, three in Wales and three in Scotland from April.

Even thrift stores are having a hard time Oxfam confirmed last year that it would close eight of its UK stores.
