Magnitude 5.8 earthquake hits Bangladesh region, tremors felt in Tripura, Mizoram and Assam

A Tripura disaster management official said in Agartala that the quake was felt in several parts of the northeastern region, including Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Assam and neighboring Bangladesh.

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck the northern coast of New Guinea, PNG, at 3:16 a.m. today, the National Center for Seismology said.

New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquakewith a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, hit parts of the northeastern region of India and the adjoining region Bangladesh, officials said. A disaster management official from Tripura said in Agartala that the quake was felt in several parts of the northeastern region, including Tripura, Mizoramparts of Assam and neighboring Bangladesh. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 9:05 a.m. at a depth of 55 km above the surface.

“Earthquake magnitude: 5.6, occurred on 12-02-2023, 09:05:31 IST, width: 23.15 and length: 90.89, depth: 55 km, location: Bangladesh, India,” said the NCS on X.

With this, at least seven earthquakes were felt in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country this year. The epicenters of most of the quakes were near Dhaka. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Comilla district. The epicenter was 86 kilometers from the BMD Seismic Center in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Tremors were also felt in several parts of West Bengal. The West Bengal Disaster Management Department said no damage has been reported anywhere in the state so far. “We have yet to receive the final report. As of now, there has been no report of any damage due to the earthquake,” an official told PTI.

Officials of the Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation also said that no damage to life or property was reported from the eastern metropolis.
