The fan explained in a post on social media that one of the last memories he has with his father is watching United's thrilling 4-3 win over Wolves together last Thursday.

Mainoo, 18, scored an incredible winning goal and gave the Killeen family a moment of joy with Vincent in hospital.

Daniel wrote: “I'd really like to try and get someone at Man Utd to get this message across to Kobbie, so any shares or retweets would be greatly appreciated.

“Unfortunately, my father (Vincent) lost his courageous battle with cancer yesterday.

“The last game we watched together was the Wolves game, just the two of us in his hospital room. When Wolves equalized we were both so frustrated.

“I never wanted United to score more than they did at that moment and then Kobbie Mainoo comes up with a great winner.

“Seeing dad's arm in the air, a smile on his face and saying 'that's why you watch United'.

“When he saw you doing an interview, he insisted I stay so he could listen.

“I know football is about winning trophies, but you will never score a more important goal for our Kobbie family.

“You're already a hero in our household and you're now my seven-year-old's favorite player.

“Thank you for a truly wonderful and special moment. I'm sure your career will bring many of them.”

Club legend Rio Ferdinand saw the post and promised to pass the message on to the club.

It led to Mainoo contacting the Killeens to express his sadness at their loss and invite them to Old Trafford.

' said the midfielder heartwarmingly video: “Hi Daniel, Kobbie here. I saw your message on Twitter and was very touched by your story.

“I'm really sorry about your father's passing. I'm glad you were able to share such a special moment together, and I was able to play a small part in it.

“I wanted to invite you and your son to a match at Old Trafford soon, so we will contact you and arrange everything.

“Stay strong and I'll see you soon.”

Daniel replied: “To everyone at Manchester United and to Kobbie. Thank you very much for responding to our message.

“It really means so much to us at this difficult time for us as a family.

“That goal and my father's reaction to it will stay with me forever and I know the fact that it was such an important goal from such a young and talented player with a great future made it even more special for him.

“Taking the time to send a video message is greatly appreciated, but giving his grandson one last gift from his grandfather (Pops) is just incredible.

“I can't tell you how grateful we are as a family and I'm sure it will be an experience that my son Joshua will really look forward to.”

Fans have praised the club and Mainoo as a “gentleman” after their great gesture.

One said: “Respectful and wholesome content.”

Another added: “Class. This is my club. When one red dies, the others are all united. More than football, we are a family.”

A third commented: “That's why we love the beautiful game.”
