Footage of four cyclists running red lights shared by highway patrol, but social media is divided over who is REALLY wrong

Video footage of four cyclists appearing to run a red light has divided opinion on social media, with users calling for the full video showing the 'violation' to be posted.

The video shows four cyclists waiting at a red light to turn right, with a line of traffic behind them.

It was posted to 'X', formerly known as Twitter, by Surrey Police's Vanguard Road Safety Team.

The caption reads: 'VanguardRST stopped these four cyclists in Esher after they were spotted going through a red traffic light. FPN is issued to everyone.'

But people on social media are not convinced a violation has been committed, with users calling for the previous 10 seconds of footage showing the cyclists running through red lights to be posted.

One person said: 'I'm very disappointed in this tweet. The video you posted does not indicate that there was a violation.

'If I put this to the police about a motor vehicle doing the same thing, they wouldn't prosecute. Your story is usually unbiased.'

Another person wrote: 'If they weren't already across the line when the light turned red, how come the car behind them is already at the stop line?

“You should have shown the offense, that would have stopped all these challenges.”

“I'm sure, but this video doesn't really show the violation,” said another.

One person on 'X' said: 'I'm very disappointed in this tweet. The video you posted does not indicate that a criminal offense has occurred.'

Another said: 'It would be nice if the video showed a violation as the way that intersection works means traffic in the right lane is past the white line at which point it is free to turn even on red .

“I'm sure it happened, but the video doesn't show anything offensive.”

Some people defended the police action, saying cyclists should obey traffic rules like everyone else.

One person wrote: 'Why are vulnerable road users putting themselves at risk unnecessarily?'

Another said: 'It's about time too. I see cyclists going through red lights all the time or jumping onto the sidewalk and back onto the road to avoid the traffic lights.”

Another wrote: Good. IF they jumped the light, they will get a ticket. Simple. Surprised you could see them and not one wearing Hi-Viz. should have been invisible. Put down that argument and the cyclist will never be punished in bed.'

'Good! Increased monitoring and visibility of cyclists who break the rules will hopefully 1) reduce the number of violations and 2) dismantle the perception that we are all lawbreakers who get away with it. I stop at every red stop,” said another.
