‘I’ve lost interest’ Unimpressed viewers blast ‘formulaic and slow’ Channel 5 psychological thriller For Her Sins

For Her Sins viewers have labeled Channel 5’s new “formal” psychological thriller, saying they have “lost interest” just two episodes into the series.

The four-part season – airing on consecutive nights this week – follows mother-of-two Laura (played by Jo Joyner), who befriends a seemingly charming woman named Emily.

Gradually, Laura’s perfect life begins to fall apart around her and the mother is haunted by flashbacks of a drowning child.

As the show progresses, it becomes clear that Emily (who is played by Rachel Shenton) is determined to wreak havoc on Laura’s life.

At the beginning of the series, the brunette beauty – hiding her own secrets – is shown speaking on the phone to an unknown person, telling them, “It sure is her.”

While viewers were gripped at first, last night’s episode didn’t go over well with audiences.

As the show aired, Twitter users shared their disappointment with how the episode turned out.

One moaned about the “formal” storylines, moaning, “Recipe for a Channel 5 drama – drowning flashbacks, sinister background music, time-filling exterior shots of family home, ex-soap actress.”

“And soooo slow!”

Meanwhile, another added: “I’ve lost interest…”

What’s more, others said they struggled to immerse themselves in the drama due to Emily’s phone.

A third wrote: ‘For the love of God, put your phone on mute!!!’

Commenting on how the character tried to take a discreet photo, a fourth said, “At least have a silent shutter on your phone.”

However, not everyone was so critical of the episode – with one fan gushing about how much they enjoyed Jo’s performance as Laura.

They tweeted, “Love Jo Joyner. Riptide was a total waste of her talents.”

Another turned the focus back to Emily, saying, “She may be a manipulative psychopath, but she sure has beautiful hair.” How does she keep it so long and thick…..?’

Earlier this month, Jo – who played Ranya Branning in EastEnders – discussed her latest role in an interview with the radio times.

She said, “Laura isn’t sure if she’s a nice person at the end of the day and if she deserves to have a nice life, if she deserves to have kids, for a variety of reasons.

“Deep down, she lacks a lot of self-esteem and doubts herself. She’s not in the mood for fun at all. She’s forgotten who she is.’

In the first episode, viewers discover that Laura keeps a box of newspaper clippings about a boy named Jamie who drowned years ago at a vacation destination.

While Emily and Jamie’s relationship is unclear at first, the audience is led to believe that Emily is somehow blaming her new boyfriend for his death.

For Her Sins continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
