A former Victoria Police senior constable has been charged after he was allegedly caught with 168 hours of sickening child sexual abuse footage.

Alan Hawley, 49, was hit with 110 criminal charges after he was found to have 19,856 child abuse images and videos on six devices.

The former senior constable faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court late last year, where he indicated he would plead guilty to child abuse charges.

Court documents obtained by the Herald Sun claim that almost half of the files depicted real children under the age of 13, while more than half were teenagers.

The devices are also said to contain a large amount of 'computer-generated' child pornography material, including two phones, three USB sticks and an SD card.

The combined “playtime” of the images amounted to more than 168 hours during which children were “sexually exploited/abused,” the documents said.

It is understood Hawley has retired from the force after being arrested last January.

He had served as a senior crime scene officer at Sunshine Police Station in Melbourne's west and had worked as a constable for 11 years.

Hawley was home with his wife when police arrived to raid the property, court documents show.

“Do you know why we're here?” the officers asked him.

'Yes. Exploitation of children,” he replied.

Victoria's anti-child exploitation team was first made aware of Hawley in December 2022 when it received information that he was uploading child abuse material via Google and instant messaging app KiK using an email address with his name.

An iPhone kept at his home reportedly contained a large amount of child abuse material in its photo gallery and file-sharing chats.

Hawley's work safe was searched, where a Samsung cell phone was located.

He was charged with 34 charges of producing child abuse material, 36 charges of transmitting child abuse material, 22 charges of using a carriage service to cause offense and six charges of possessing child abuse material.

In December, Hawley told Magistrate Belinda Wallington he plans to plead guilty when he appears in Victoria's County Court.

The former officer will now enter negotiations with prosecutors to determine which of the 110 charges he will plead guilty to.

Hawley requested that his name be removed from media reports, citing his family's mental health, but the magistrate denied this.

He is due to appear in the County Court on February 1.
