Frankie Grande credits his journey to sobriety with bringing him and his famous family closer together.
“The six years of sobriety have repaired my relationship with my family,” Grande, 40, said during an interview Today with Hoda and Jenna on Thursday, January 4. “That has been the greatest blessing of my life, is the fact that I get the first call again when my sister wants to ask a question or my mother needs help with something. I am the first caller, which I haven’t been for years.”
Frankie, whose younger sister is Ariana Grande, noted that at the height of his addiction he felt “so blessed” because he was still able to work. “People didn’t say, ‘Oh, you need help,’ which is great, but it’s also kind of a curse because I was like, ‘Well, no one tells me I need help,'” he explained. “So I had to realize that it was time to get help.”
His low point came after the suicide bombing at Ariana’s concert in Manchester, England in May 2017, which killed 22 people. “I realized I couldn’t show up to help my family,” he said of his mentality after the attack. “It took me further and further into using and further away from my family.”
Now that he’s been sober for six years, Frankie and his family are stronger than ever. He and Ariana, 30, recently had “the best vacation” with their mom, Jeanneand grandmother Marjoriealso known as Nonna.
“Christmas was so magical because my mom had both of her kids together, and we’re both quite busy,” Frankie said Thursday. “So it was really nice to be able to be there with her, and with my grandmother, who just turned 98 years old.”
Frankie commemorated his family’s Christmas by posting sweet selfies with his mom and Ariana via Instagram. “Merry Christmas! 🎄❤️,” he captioned the photos on Christmas Eve.
Frankie celebrated his sixth sobriety anniversary in June 2023 by taking a trip to Disneyland with friends, including Lance Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin. “Sobriety is hard for addicts like me, but if you surround yourself with incredible, supportive people and you put in the work… it is possible, no matter how far down the drain you have fallen,” he wrote. Instagram photos from his amusement park trip. “I love you, my down-to-earth sisters and my supportive family/friends. I am so happy and blessed that I didn’t have to do this without you.”
Ariana previously praised Frankie for celebrating 20 months of sobriety in February 2019. “Man I love you @FrankieJGrande. Cheerful. twenty. Months,” the singer wrote in a now-deleted tweet Billboard. “I stare at this draft and delete it because everything I write makes me cry. Just know that I think you are a superhero and you make me very proud. everyone knows how hard this is and how strong you have been. congratulations and thank God.”
