Royal Mint unveils brand new collectible coin in honor of icon George Michael

A COLLECTIBLE coin in honor of George Michael is issued by the Royal Mint.

It features the singer-songwriter’s signature look from his debut solo album Faith.

It is the latest in the Mint’s Music Legends series and follows coins for David Bowie, Sir Elton John and Queen.

It was designed by artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana and shows the star in his mirror sunglasses.

Ms Deiana said: “From the start of the project I was clear about certain elements I wanted to include in the design.

“I wanted a detailed portrait that captured his charismatic expression – I was thinking especially of his iconic sunglasses.

“It’s great to be able to pay tribute to his music and what you see in the design is really a piece of George Michael’s song.”

Rebecca Morgan, director of collectors services at the Royal Mint, said: “From his debut with Wham! To become one of the best-selling solo musicians of all time, George Michael is a global superstar whose work has inspired and influenced generations with his music and his unique style.

“Loved by millions of fans around the world, we are delighted to introduce an official British coin to honor his life and legacy.”

The Mint said it was approved by his estate.

George, who became famous in Wham! in the 1980s, died on Christmas Day in 2016, aged 53.

The coins are available from 9am today on the Royal Mint website.

Prices start from £15.50 for a brilliant uncirculated coin valued at £5, while a color version is available for £24.50.

A 2oz gold coin, valued at £200, retails for £5,305.
