The couple who had met at school in Hertfordshire split amicably when George embarked on a solo career.

The documentary contains a wealth of previously unseen material. One of the producers, Simon Halfon, says his team spent more than two years sourcing footage and audio, and as a friend of both men, Simon had a good idea where to look.

It comes after former Wham! guitarist Andrew discussed his relationship with George, saying that the singer’s “later years weren’t his best” due to “many contributing factors”.

Speaking about what it was like coming to terms with Michael’s death, 60-year-old Ridgeley told radio timesIt is a great loss to me and all his friends that we cannot enjoy his company at this stage of life.

His later years weren’t his best, with many contributing factors, but for me, even lately, our meetings always had the same things as before.

“The pleasure we found in each other’s company and the amusement with which we watched each other—that didn’t change.”
