Reyna will undergo a medical later on Wednesday and is under contract with the German giants until 2025.

It is understood the deal could include an option to buy for around Β£12.5m.

According to ESPNThe move comes after talks with Seville failed.

Marseille, Monaco and Wolves are also said to be in the race to sign the attacking midfielder.

Reyna has been limited to 11 Bundesliga appearances this season and has failed to register a goal or assist in that time.

His representatives include super agent Jorge Mendes and his famous father.

Former Manchester City and Sunderland hero Claudio Reyna enjoyed more than five years in the English top flight.

Between 2001 and 2007 he played more than 100 times in the Prem, and 112 times for his country.

Reyna, now 50, left Man City for family reasons in January 2007, with boss Stuart Pearce saying at the time: β€œWe are speaking to his representatives about terminating his contract.

β€œIt has to do with family reasons, nothing sinister. I can understand the reasons he gave me.

“He believes that his family should come before his professional career at this stage. It is a matter of reaching a deal that is acceptable to the player and the club.”

Gio was born in Sunderland and was named after his father's former Rangers team-mate Giovanni van Bronkhorst.

Forest, meanwhile, failed to recruit former Manchester United goalkeeper Jack Butland from Rangers.

Nuno Espirito Santo was on the hunt for a new goalkeeper before Matt Turner's dismal blunder in the club's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.
