The Danish royal family has released a video on social media celebrating Queen Margrethe's reign, to the tune of Cyndi Lauper's Girl Just Wanna Have Fun.

Shared via the royal @detdanskekongehus Instagram account, the clip has amassed over 77,000 likes in less than a day.

In the short video, the former queen – who was shocked by her abdication after her 52-year reign – is seen taking on a series of tasks as the royal.

The caption reads: 'Special moments from the reign of Her Majesty the Queen.

'Tomorrow the Queen will abdicate as Queen of Denmark and leave the throne to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.

One of the special moments captured in the clip was Margrethe dancing with dignitaries. She even posed with the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died at Balmoral last September.

A balcony photo showed the former monarch smiling and waving with her family. Meanwhile, another clip showed her cheering on the international football team.

Margrethe shocked royal watchers with news of her abdication via a statement released on social media on New Year's Eve.

It read: 'I've decided now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after I followed my beloved father – I will step back as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.

'Tonight I would first and foremost like to express my thanks.

'Thank you for the overwhelming warmth and support I have received all these years.

'Thanks to the changing governments with whom cooperation has always been worthwhile, and thanks to Parliament, which has always placed their trust in me.

The transfer of power took place today, with the new King and Queen Consort taking on their new roles.
