ANDROID owners may lose access to Google Assistant's Driving Mode, which allows users to make calls and answer messages on the go.

Users who start using the feature will see a drop-down banner warning them that the feature will disappear in February.

Google hasn't provided an exact date, so it could disappear tomorrow.

However, since the banner has only just appeared, its removal is expected to happen later this month once Android users have been properly notified.

According to Android Police, other parts of the driving mode, such as the music controls, may remain intact despite the lockdown.

The move is part of a broader, little-known plan for Google Assistant, rival to Apple's Siri.

Will Google Assistant's Driving Mode be replaced?

According to a separate report from 9to5Google, Google Assistant is getting a refresh on Android Auto, which could be the company's answer to an alternative driving companion.

Android Auto brings your phone's apps to your car's display, but only works on newer, connected cars.

It provides assistance with the same tasks as Google Assistant's driving mode.

For example, you can dictate messages while following directions in Google Maps.

The new update means that Google Assistant will transcribe what you ask it to do in Android Auto in live time.

The update will be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.

It's unclear whether Google is consciously trying to transition Android owners to Android Auto.

It's not a direct replacement, but Android owners with modern cars can use it in a similar way to Google Assistant's Driving Mode.
