Haldwani: At least four people were killed and as many as 250 injured in a massive communal violence that broke out on Thursday following the demolition of an illegal madrasa and an adjacent mosque in Haldwani in Uttarakhand. The violence has led to a curfew in the city, with the state government issuing orders to the rioters to shoot on sight. Internet services have also been completely suspended to stem hate speech. The confrontation led to mass violence after a team of government officials, accompanied by a heavy police force, tried to demolish an “illegal” mosque on court orders.

Authorities say the madrasa and mosque were built illegally, leading to their demolition. However, this action angered a crowd in the Vanbhulpura area, leading to violence.
Fifty police officers were injured as a result of the violence.
The angry mob, described as 'unruly elements', pelted stones at the officials, prompting police to retaliate with lathi charges and tear gas.
