Cyclone Michaung Effect: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh over the next 10-12 hours due to the after-effects of Cyclone Michaung, which made landfall in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

According to IMD, Cyclone Michaung will continue to impact rainfall patterns despite the cyclonic storm weakening into a depression. Isolated rainfall is likely to hit parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over the next 12 hours, the weather department said.

Two days after the cyclone ‘Michaung’ confrontation, many parts of Chennai continued to experience severe flooding, waterlogging and power outages. To take note of the flood situation, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Tamil Nadu on Thursday. He will also hold a meeting with CM MK Stalin.

Despite weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area, Cyclone Michaung will continue to bring heavy rainfall at isolated places in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh over the next 10 to 12 hours, according to IMD.

Cyclone Michaung has slowly weakened after making landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. During the landfall process, the severe cyclonic storm passed with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h.

Weather agencies said on Wednesday evening that Tamil Nadu and southern parts of Andhra Pradesh will not receive any more rain even as both states continue to battle the trail of destruction left by the devastating cyclone.

  • Early on Wednesday morning, around 5:30 am, the remnants of the cyclonic storm weakened into a depression and was located about 50 km east-northeast of Khammam, 110 km northwest of Gannavaram (Vijayawada) by 5:30 am on Wednesday. and 250 km southwest of Jagdalpur, the IMD said in a statement.
  • According to a release by the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), there is no more cyclone threat for Odisha, but the remnants of Michaung will cause widespread rainfall in Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur districts.
  • In its daily bulletin on Wednesday evening, the IMD said Michaung is currently hovering over southern Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas and is expected to lose more strength over the next 12 hours.
  • Chennai, which was completely flooded due to heavy rains caused by the cyclone, suffered prolonged power outages in several parts of the city, while the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday for schools and colleges in the capital on December 7 of the state.
  • Meanwhile, Odisha recorded an average rainfall of 6.5 mm in the last 24 hours, with the highest downpour of 106.0 mm recorded in Pottangi block of Koraput district.
  • Speaking to news agency ANI, DG IMD Mrityunjay Mohapatra said Cyclone Michaung has weakened significantly since it made landfall and will no longer have disastrous consequences. However, the cyclonic storm will continue to bring heavy rainfall – ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm – in parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh.
  • Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Tamil Nadu on Thursday to assess the flood situation due to Cyclone Michaung. Our Defense Minister Thiru @rajnathsingh avl will be in Chennai tomorrow to assess the flood situation caused by Cyclone Michaung.
  • Singh will be accompanied by Thangam Thennarasu, Finance Minister and State Secretary, during this visit. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan will also accompany the Defense Minister during the visit.
  • After the air visit, Rajnath Singh will hold a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MP Stalin and discuss the relief efforts being carried out by various agencies in the state.
  • Earlier today, CM Stalin took stock of the affected areas due to Cyclone Michaung and distributed essentials like food and milk to the rain-affected people in Chennai.
  • “The water in the outskirts of Chennai is still flooded. Many people work in the fields to ensure that everyone gets the necessary things such as food and milk. We continue our fieldwork in the hope that the situation will improve soon!” MK Stalin posted on X.
  • Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones to Cyclone Michaung.

  • Following the devastation caused by Cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Modi requesting an immediate interim relief fund of Rs 5060 crores.
