You can tell from the cinematic intro that Helldivers 2 is the type of blockbuster game you'd expect from Sony's PlayStation Studios.

It quickly started to gain popularity online as a parody of over-the-top patriotism, except this war takes place in space.

As a Helldiver, you must protect Super Earth from all threats, and that means traveling to other planets where violent alien insects and robots live.

It's a live service, which means the developers can update the game with new hordes of enemies as needed.

As players complete missions, they liberate each planet little by little, allowing the player base to take aim at the world's objectives.

It's a brilliant way to change up the formula, as instead of fighting the same PvE battles you're encouraged to venture further to new planets to take on threats.

In addition to liberating the planet, you will also receive a number of rewards and resources that will help you become personally stronger.

Taking on more challenging missions will allow you to level up faster, but the difficulty will increase quickly depending on the mission type.

The only downside to Helldivers 2 is that the action can feel a bit mindless at times.

Your capsule crashes on an enemy planet, you escape the ship and take down all the weapons your party needs.

You can explore moving, shooting, and pinging landmarks on your map, but you can just as easily head straight for the objective and head to the extraction point.

If you follow the latter strategy, you can easily complete some missions by taking out less than 10 enemies, but that's against the spirit.

A big part of each stage's strategy comes from Stratagems, which are special abilities that heal, replenish ammo, or even deal massive damage.

So while running and gunning can be mindless, your brain can focus on all these special skills.

It's one of the most promising live service games to be released in years, and it's clear why it's become so popular.
