Martin Frizell, editor of This Morning’s under fire, also missed the event, along with the show’s other main presenters Dermot O’Leary, Alison Hammond and Craig Doyle. Daytime head of ITV Emma Gormley, who is also implicated in the scandal, was absent.

Meanwhile, 63-year-old Holmes arrived on the red carpet using two crutches after undergoing hip surgery.

An ITV insider said: ‘If you had been Holly you wouldn’t have gone, would you? Not only would you have come face to face with Eamonn, but you would have had to endure the humiliation of losing A Place in The Sun.

“It was all very different from this time last year, when Holly and Phil showed up, with big smiles on their faces and were the toast of the party.”

Ellie Simmonds, who revealed she was adopted at birth, received the award for A Place in The Sun.
