How to tailor your look for summer – according to the woman behind the label, beloved by Kate

From smart trousers to classic waistcoats, there’s no need to strip down this summer, even when the mercury rises.

Because while we might associate it with workwear, tailoring is the ultimate way to stay cool whether you’re in the office or on the road.

I founded Winser London ten years ago with the aim of bringing well-made, luxurious pieces from women’s work wardrobe into everyday life.

Now you can find blazers and blouses in all walks of life. Take the mother of pearl three piece trouser suit with our satin back crepe blazer and wide trousers for example. It’s light, flowy and relaxed, while also looking polished.

The waistcoat underneath is a favorite of mine; people may think waistcoats are austere, but it’s how you wear them that matters.

Kim Winser thought Kate Middleton’s outfit, featuring Winser London’s soft blue bow-tie blouse and a matching jacket, showed skill in putting clothes together in a modern way

I like mine undone over a T-shirt, with shorts and sandals. It adds a touch of style to an otherwise casual outfit – perfect for after work drinks or a summer party.

You can also wear a waistcoat alone for a look that’s sophisticated but with a fashion-forward edge, like the blue Mint Velvet waistcoat, £99, seen here.

Shorts have also had a makeover. I wear mine with an oversized shirt for that instant ‘styled’ look.

And, worn with a jacket and waistcoat like the Plaid Boden Shorts (£65), they make a fun alternative to the classic midi dress we usually turn to for summer events.

It’s power dressing at its best; wear something that is made of a quality fabric, well cut, and it will make any woman – regardless of her figure – feel good.

I’m often asked what I thought when the Princess of Wales recently wore our soft blue bow-tie blouse and matching coat.

It was an outfit that showcased her skill at putting clothes together in a very modern way, proving that she isn’t afraid to put her own spin on it.

Because the beauty of customization is that you work for it from morning to night, all day long for every occasion.

Small changes like adding or removing a layer, or switching up your accessories can transform an outfit with minimal effort.

When it comes to color, neutrals like navy blue and gray provide longevity, but don’t be afraid of a fresh pop of color. I have red, orange, yellow and green in my wardrobe.

And when you’re wearing bright colors, go big. It will boost your confidence and make you – and others around you – laugh.

After all, it is the sunshine season.
