South Carolina is holding open primaries, so anyone registered to vote in the state can go to the polls on Saturday to participate in the first official Democratic primary of the year.

Registered Republican and independent voters who choose to vote Saturday do not have to change their party affiliation, but they cannot vote in the Republican primary, which takes place on February 24.

However, it is too late for new voters to register for the primaries. Residents can check their registration status online by entering some personal information on the website election commission website.

Polling stations across the state are open from 7am to 7pm and anyone still in line at 7pm can vote.

If you requested and received an absentee ballot but did not mail it in, you can still drop it off yourself at a local polling place until 7 p.m. Here you will find the address of the nearest polling station here online. If you've already mailed your absentee ballot and want to make sure it arrives before the deadline, you can track its status here online.

South Carolina requires voters to show photo identification at the polls before voting. There are a few different types of of identification that election officials will accept, including driver's licenses, passports and voter ID cards with photos. If you forget to bring a photo ID but have a voter registration card without a photo, you can cast a provisional ballot. The provisional ballot will be counted in the election if you present photo identification to election officials by Thursday, February 8, when primary election results are certified.

Only three candidates will appear in Saturday's Democratic primary: President Joe Biden and his two challengers, Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and self-help author Marianne Williamson. You can find a complete sample ballot here online.
