Anthony, who hails from the vibrant DC metropolitan area, was presented with an almost unheard of scenario when only two other people boarded the plane.

But then the culinary chef was about to sit back and relax, one of the other travelers decided to sit directly behind him – despite having the luxury of sitting in the entire plane.

Take to X (formerly Twitter) to vent his anger, Mr Thomas shared a selfie he took to show how close the man had decided to sit next to him.

“Imagine having the luxury of boarding a flight with just two passengers,” he wrote in the caption of the post.

“Look where he decided to sit, of all the seats on the flight.”

The third passenger clearly got the memo and can be seen at the back of the plane, far out of sight.

Antonius was on board one Southwest Airlines flight, which it says has an open seat policy for its passengers website.

This means travelers flying with the airline can choose any available seat as soon as they board their plane – making the man's seat choice on the nearly empty flight even stranger.

It is not known where Anthony was traveling to and how long the flight lasted, or whether he or the other passenger decided to switch seats.

Passenger left bewildered after booking the flight, but it turned out to be completely empty

Nevertheless, the image was viewed more than 35 million times on Tuesday, and thousands of people took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the situation.

One person said: “I honestly would have moved. That guy is weird and I wouldn't want him behind me for that reason alone.”

Another added: “I would have been so passive-aggressive if I switched seats.”

However, many were quick to defend the other passenger, citing a number of reasons for his decision to sit so close.

“I think these people are extremely codependent,” one person suggested.

“He probably has anxiety when it comes to planes/flying and being close to someone else gave him a sense of security,” said another.

However, others saw the funny side and offered their own jokes and took up the man's decision, including suggestions that he could have been the air marshal.

But Anthony isn't the only passenger who has enjoyed an empty flight lately. leaving one man stunned when no one else boarded his plane.

Passenger Robbie Allen came from Sydney Unpleasant Fiji with Virgin when he realized he would be the only passenger on the plane.

And one father was also stunned when he came to the airport to discover it he was the only passenger to board his Jet2 flight.

Paul Wilkinson was called a “king” by the cabin crew and treated the flight as if he had his own private jet.
