I’m a dentist and here are five high street products I tell my patients not to buy – including charcoal toothpaste

A dentist has revealed the five popular products she advises against for her patients, including charcoal toothpaste.

Dr. Surina Sehgal, who works in central London, is a general and cosmetic dentist.

Earlier this month, the TikTok star – who has 35,000 followers – went viral when she got a video she deviates when discussing the usual oral hygiene products.

Surina opened the video in her practice and said, “Come with me to review some of the worst dental products you can buy without a prescription.”

After walking to her local Boots, the expert filmed herself holding a bottle of Listerine mouthwash as an example she would personally avoid.

Dr. London’s Surina Sehgal went viral on TikTok earlier this month with her “don’t buy” video

She explained, “Avoid alcohol in all mouthwashes, it’s way too harsh.”

If mouthwash containing alcohol is used too often, the enamel of your teeth may begin to dissolve.

Subsequently, the dentist urged people not to buy their own DIY kits, which often included scalpels for removing plaque at home.

Using a Boots own-brand kit as an example, Surina said, “The instruments here have really sharp edges, so it’s easy to traumatize your gums and chip your teeth.”

Third, Surina advised against using “color-correcting” serums — saying they’re often not worth the money.

The expert continued, “This [product] works through a really clever color illusion, but doesn’t actually whiten your teeth.

“So don’t believe the hype guys!”

Following this, Surina turned her attention to home whitening kits and urged viewers to check the ingredients before purchasing.

She said, “I see these at-home whitening kits everywhere. Be very careful as some contain mild acids and abrasives that can damage your enamel in the long run.”

As the video came to a close, Surina focused on charcoal toothpaste – which promises to remove stains and whiten teeth.

She claimed: ‘[They] contain abrasive particles to remove surface stains, but daily use of these may cause your enamel to thin.’

The video has garnered more than 52,000 “likes” in the past week — and viewers have been thankful for the expert guidance.

One replied, “One of the best don’t buys I’ve seen!”

Another joked, “I’ve used them all in the past five years.”

Meanwhile, a third said, “Glad someone said this!”
