It’s called Message Filtering and it automatically splits your message iPhone SMS inbox to known and unknown senders.

And anything from an unknown sender is automatically silenced and hidden in a separate stack that you have to manually check.

A Reddit thread about the overlooked feature generated hundreds of upvotes from puzzled iPhone owners.

The wire posted a photo of the menu in Posts with the caption: “Did Apple just add this screen to Messages or did I just discover it?”

One user wrote: “How did you discover it? I’m asking for someone who’s never seen that screen before, lol.”

Another said: ‘Okay, tell me the secret. How did you get involved?’

But others pointed out that the feature has been available in the iPhone settings for years.

Apple also recommends the feature on its support pages as a way to “reduce the number of unwanted messages you receive”.

The iPhone maker notes: “With iMessage you can prevent unknown senders from texting you directly.

“Their messages will be filtered to another folder and you will not be notified.”

‘I can’t believe it,’ say iPhone owners after finding a secret trick to falling asleep, saying it’s ‘the only way I can sleep’

SAFE SPACE

Setting up message filtering is extremely easy.

Just go to Settings > Messages and then scroll down to Message Filtering.

Now set the Filter unknown senders setting to on.

Then go to your Messages app and tap Filters in the top left corner. You will find the button in your conversation list.

Next one Tap Unknown Senders to see all your messages from people not saved in your contacts.

Please note that these notifications are disabled, so you will have to check the folder manually.

The idea is that you leave your inbox set to Known Senders and then check Unknown Senders every now and then.

You can change your settings and chosen inbox at any time.
