A popular Italian restaurant has closed its doors after declaring bankruptcy, laying off all its staff.

A Tavola, which had restaurants in Sydney’s Darlinghurst and Bondi, as well as a home delivery service, declared bankruptcy on Wednesday.

Sister companies Flour Eggs Water Surry Hills and meatball restaurant Palle have also gone bankrupt.

The businesses are owned by Chef Eugenio Maiale and his wife Michelle.

The trustee, Shumit Banerjee of Westburn Advisory, said on Wednesday that all staff had “sadly been laid off”.

The amount of creditors is not yet known, but it is believed the Australian Taxation Office, suppliers and landlords are all owed.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the main catalyst for my appointment was the companies’ failure to secure terms with landlords and suppliers that would allow them to trade profitably,” Mr Banerjee told Daily Mail Australia.

The amount owed is reportedly in the hundreds of thousands.

A Tavola first opened in Darlinghurst in 2007 and popped up in Bondi in 2013.

The Bondi restaurant closed earlier this year.

Flour Eggs Water was also popular with guests and was located in the heart of Surry Hills on Crown Street.

The Flour Eggs Water restaurant in Tramsheds has also closed.

The Maiales introduced A Tavola At Home during the pandemic in 2020, allowing customers to order their favorite meals to their homes.

Palle was the couple’s newest venture, opening last year in Sydney’s Tramsheds.
