Janel Parrish Says ‘PLL’ Fans Identified Her on ‘The Masked Singer’

Janel Parrish successfully concealed her identity from the panelists throughout season 10 of The Masked Singerbut there was one group that was not fooled: Liars fans.

Parrish, 35, who played Mona in teen drama Freeform, exclusively told We weekly That PLL viewers quickly suspected she was behind the Gazelle mask after unearthing old clips of Mona singing on the show.

“I saw a hilarious comment from one of the PLL fans,” she recalled ahead of the Wednesday, December 20, season finale. “They said, ‘You can’t hide, Mona, we know it’s you!’ I thought, ‘Oh, wow.’ That PLL fans, they are little sleuths! They know what’s going on. … There’s a whole network of them PLL fans saying, ‘We know it’s you, Mona!’”

One of Gazelle’s clue packages contained a test paper with an A-minus on it, leading savvy viewers to suspect that Parrish was behind the mask. (Mona was the original A op PLLwhich ran from 2010 to 2017.)

However, Parrish’s family didn’t need any clues to figure out it was her. Participants of The Masked Singer They were sworn to utmost secrecy about their participation on the show, but no amount of denial could convince Parrish’s aunt that she wasn’t Gazelle.

“She said she thought it was my voice, but when she saw my mannerisms, even as Gazelle with the filter on my voice, she knew it was me just by my body mannerisms,” Parrish said. Us. “I’ve lied a lot – apparently I’ve lied badly to some family members who said, ‘I know you’re lying, but it’s fine, you probably can’t tell me.’”

While fans mainly know Parrish as an actress from her roles in PLL and the To all the boys I loved before film franchise, she has also worked in musical theater and appeared in productions of Fat And Spring blossoms.

“My first job ever was as Little Cosette on Broadway Les Miserables,” she said Us. “I thought my career was going to be theater because I was a kid and I thought the course of my life was going to take me there, and as fate had it, it led more into TV and film, and when that happened, I went singing less and less. So it became a bit of a fear and a vulnerability. Like, ‘I was a child singer, am I still a singer?’”

“This show really gave me the opportunity to overcome that fear anonymously, without any preconceived ideas about who I am or what I do, or whether or not I’m a singer,” Parrish said. Us. “I had to come out and sing and find my voice and find that courage, and I got nothing but love and positivity. It gave me so much confidence to be able to say, ‘You know what? I’m a singer.’ And that meant so much to me. I’m just so grateful that this show gave me the stage to do what I love in a very non-creepy way by coming out as this creature and seeing what happened.

After The Masked SingerParrish is focusing on producing “some really fun projects that are close to her heart,” but she also thinks it might be time to return to her musical roots.

“I’m actually hoping to get back into doing some music like I did when I was a kid,” she said Us. “Going back to Broadway as an adult would be a dream come true.”
