Jo Koy's Golden Globes debut has turned out to be quite a learning experience, especially after he called members of his writing team on stage.

“I love my writers. I love all three of them and I shouted out to them,” 52-year-old Koy told the newspaper Los Angeles Times in a profile published on Thursday, January 11. “And I told them this was a moment where I just understood. I love them and I can't stop talking about them in every interview. They busted their butts, man. There are a lot of greats making rookie moves. That was a beginner's move.”

He continued: “Those writers are dope and that was not my intention at all. They were great, they had my back and I have to make sure I fix that and I always will.

Koy hosted the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. During his opening monologue, he compared Barbie to its box office rival Oppenheimer, which he said was adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning book. The Greta Gerwig-directed film, he joked, was based on a “doll with big breasts.” The camera panned to show the main characters of Gerwig and Barbie Ryan Gosling And Margot Robbieall of whom were unimpressed, as was most of the audience.

The comedian, 52, took to the stage on Sunday, January 7, after a long search for a presenter. Koy followed in the footsteps of other comedians, including Jerrod Carmichael, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, […]

“Yo, I got this gig 10 days ago. Do you want a perfect monologue? Shut up,” Koy said before continuing. “You're kidding, right? I've written a few, and they make you laugh.'

After the ceremony, Gerwig brushed the ball off Barbie dig into a radio interview, but the controversial monologue didn't sit well with viewers. During a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, the comedian insisted that all his jokes were vetted and approved by his writing team.

“It's so crazy because the day before we were all sitting here. It was the first time we all met in person, the day before we had to turn in that monologue,” Koy said. “One time that was all we had. It was the most insane thing. And all we did was just sit there and just think about it. And then you know there are suggestions. I went onto my stage [here at my office] and just walked through it verbally. But I was going through it [our group]Of course we're going to laugh about it. It's honest feedback for us, but I haven't been able to play it anywhere on stage.”

Koy added: “I think I did well considering the circumstances.”

Perhaps the most talked-about moment of Koy's Globes performance was his comment about Taylor Swiftwho was nominated for her Eras tour concert film. Koy joked that the awards show would feature fewer cutaway shots for the 34-year-old Swift than NFL games. (Swift is a regular at Boyfriend Travis Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs games since September 2023, with jumbotron operators regularly showing her in her suite.) At the Globes, Swift seemed visibly annoyed by the reference as she sipped her drink.

“The whole point of that joke was to make fun of the NFL,” Koy told the newspaper Time. “The nice thing about the Globes is that we don't have to do cutaways for ratings. What hurts the most is that I just support Taylor, I support her, I love her work. I have nieces that I bought tickets for. There is no malicious intent in that joke.”
