Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the state government’s plan to regularize the jobs of around 40,000 teachers.

GuwahatiIn good news for the teachers in the state, the Assam government on Tuesday said it had decided to regularize the jobs of nearly 40,000 teachers working in government schools in the state on contractual basis.

“There are more than 25,000 TET qualified teachers working on contract basis in primary schools across the state. In addition, there were also 9,500 contractual teachers working in primary schools,” said Minister of State for Education Ranoj Pegu.

Moreover, there are 4,500 teachers who take lessons from students studying in grades 9 and 10. We have decided to give all of them permanent positions,” he added.

Earlier this year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his Independence Day speech had announced the state government’s plan to regularize the jobs of around 40,000 teachers.

“The education department has worked as per the Prime Minister’s announcement and prepared a plan to regularize the jobs of those 40,000 teachers. We have set a target to complete the entire process by March next year,” Pegu told reporters on Monday.

He also said that the previous service of contractual teachers will not be calculated. “Those who join the regular posts will be treated as new appointments.”

Although the 40,000 teachers worked on contractual posts, they received the regular pay scale just like permanent teachers.

According to Pegu, the salaries of these teachers will decrease after they take up regular posts as the previous service period is not taken into account.
