Jon Bon Jovi candidly shared where he stands with his former bandmate Richie Sambora.
“We no longer have contact because he is no longer in the organization,” Bon Jovi (62) said. Ultimate classic rock on Thursday, March 14. “[That] doesn’t mean there isn’t love forever, but it’s been eleven years since he just stopped showing up.
After 30 years as lead guitarist, Sambora left the band in 2013 during the Because we can world tour, a source confirms We weekly at the time. “There were many well-documented issues, so this was the best decision for now,” the insider said. Phil X (real name Theofilos Xenidis) replaced Sambora.
“And there were emotional issues that he had to deal with as a single father, and there were substance abuse issues that, you know… Phil said. ‘And then there’s another show that evening. What do we do?”
Bon Jovi and Sambora, 64, will appear in the upcoming four-part Hulu docuseries Thank you good night: the Bon Jovi story which debuts on April 26. When asked if he had spoken to Sambora about the docuseries, Bon Jovi said no.
“Not a word,” Bon Jovi said. “That was [director] Gotham Chopra. This wasn’t a puff and this wasn’t nonsense. This isn’t us pulling the strings behind the scenes. Oh no, no, no. They interviewed Richie in London. I was not there. I had nothing to do with it. No, I still haven’t seen that one [finished] Product.”
Bon Jovi talked about Sambora’s departure during an interview Good morning America in 2016. “Everyone’s like, ‘Well, what happened?'” he said at the time. “We were in Calgary. The last album reached number 1 in the charts. We’re sold out every night. It’s show #21, and in short: Richie just didn’t show up on the show.
Bon Jovi noted that the band had not seen him in person since. “There was no fight. There was no money. I don’t swear to anything in my entire career, and he’ll tell you the same thing. So we kept going,” he said.
When Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, Sambora appeared and performed with the band.
On Thursday, Bon Jovi shared that he is releasing a new album, Foreveron June 7. He also released the first single ‘Legendary’, which refers to a ‘girl with brown eyes’.
“What’s more important to me right now is just being here with my friends, writing the song I want to write and living the life I want to live,” Bon Jovi said. “And my brown-eyed girl, of course she is Van Morrison nod, but not in this case: it’s my wife.
Bon Jovi married Dorothea Hurley in 1989. The couple welcomed daughter Stephanie, son Jesse, son Jake and son Romeo in May 1993, February 1995, May 2002 and March 2004, respectively.
“She has been faithfully there throughout this process,” Bon Jovi said of his wife. “And the girl with the brown eyes, she believes in me, legendary.” There it is. And that is who and what I am at the age of 62.”
