Los Angeles police offer insight into why rapper Killer Mike was arrested at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
“On Sunday, February 4, just after 4:00 p.m., a male adult was detained and handcuffed following a physical altercation that occurred in the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court,” the LAPD said. shared via X late Sunday evening. “The suspect was arrested and transported to the LAPD Central Division.”
In a separate post, the LAPD revealed that the suspect was identified as Michael Render, Killer Mike's real name. He was “booked for misdemeanor assault” and released.
Mike, 48, took home three Grammy Awards on Sunday before his arrest. He won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for the song “Scientists & Engineers” André 3000, Future And Eryn Allen Kane and received Best Rap Album for his 2023 record, Michael.
The suspect has been identified as 48-year-old Michael Render and booked into Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC and is currently on bail.

“I'm a black man in America and as a child I had a dream to be part of music. And that 9-year-old is now dancing excitedly inside me,” Mike said as he accepted his award for best rap performance. “I want to thank everyone who dares to believe that art can change the world.”
On Monday, February 5, Mike appeared on Audacy's V-103 and spoke about the incident, while being cagey about what actually happened.

The Hollywood Reporter'S Chris Gardner sparked concern on Sunday after sharing a video of the musician leaving the awards ceremony in handcuffs.

According to Gardner, Mike's team was initially told it was “possible he would be released from the arena later tonight,” but the details were unclear at the time.
“I just spoke to an official who tells me it is a criminal offense and has nothing to do with what happened here at the arena today,” a follow-up post said. 'He will probably be released once the case is resolved. 'It's a big nothing,' says one source.”
Gardner later saw the CEO of the Recording Academy Harvey Mason Jr. I spoke to Mike's team at the arena.
