The mystery woman was revealed as one of Iñaki's colleagues at the law firm Imaz & Asociados, Ainhoa Armenia, and a week later Cristina and her husband released a joint statement saying they were breaking up.

Fast forward some two years later, and the divorce papers have been signed by both parties at a notary office in Barcelona, according to HELLO!

Iñaki and Ainhoa now live together in an apartment in Vitoria, where Iñaki works at a construction company, the Spanish magazine said.

Urdangarin married Cristina in 1997, and the couple have four children. In 2018, he was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzlement and money laundering of more than £4.5 million through his non-profit organization, the Noos Institute.

In 2021, he was allowed to move to Spain's Grade 3 prison regime, which meant he only had to report to prison once a week.

In their 2022 statement to EFE, the couple asked for “respect” for a personal decision “to terminate our marital relationship by mutual consent.”

They added that their commitment to their four children remains “intact,” the agency said.

A week before the news broke, photos of Urdangarin with another woman sent shockwaves through Europe.

Speaking with the Hello magazinethe retired handball player said the family would handle the situation “with utmost calmness and together as always.”

Although the images came as a shock to the general public, sources said Hello! that Infanta Cristina was not surprised by the blow and “already knew” about the relationship – although the husband and wife did spend Christmas together.

Lecturas reported that Urdangarin and the woman were photographed in France, while Cristina was in Switzerland with their children.

Urdangarin told the local press: “Things are happening and we are going to deal with them in the best way possible.

'We're going to make it [the situation] with utmost calmness and together, as always,” he added.

Meanwhile, the couple's second child, Pablo, who plays handball for FC Barcelona, said: “We are all going to love each other equally.”

Cristina's marriage to Urdangarin has had some ups and downs over the past decade following the investigation into fraud claims that led to his conviction.

In 2011, Urdangarin was accused of diverting public funds through the Nóos Institute, and the non-profit organization was investigated by Spain's Anti-Corruption Agency.

In December 2011, the Anticorruption Bureau confirmed that Urdangarin had sent significant sums of public money to accounts in Belize and Britain.

In early 2012, he appeared twice before judges to discuss these corruption allegations.

In June 2016, after five years of investigation, a prosecutor demanded that Urdangarin be given 19 years in prison and a fine of 980,000 euros.

He was sentenced to six years and three months in prison and a fine of 512,000 euros in February 2017, but appealed the verdict.

In 2018, the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced him to five years and ten months in prison and he reported to Brevia Prison in Avila.

However, in 2020 he was allowed to move to the Grade 3 regime, which meant he regained his freedom of movement and only had to report to prison once a week.

In an attempt to distance themselves from these corruption claims, the Spanish royal family has removed the section dedicated to Iñaki Urdangarin from their website.

Infanta Cristina was also investigated for corruption but was acquitted of all charges.

However, her brother, King Felipe VI, stripped her of her title of Duchess of Palma in 2015.

Lectures Felipe and the now disgraced King Juan Carlos insisted that Cristina leave Urdangarin when he faced trouble with the law, but she stayed with him and eventually drifted away from her family.

However, in 2019 the publication claimed that Cristina consulted a divorce lawyer in an attempt to end her marriage to Urdangarin after it was reported that he had had an affair with the wife of one of his marriage witnesses.

She remains sixth in line to the throne, behind her older sister, Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo, and her two children.
