According to reports, the fire broke out in front of counter number 16 near gate number 3 (Departures). The exact reason behind the fire has yet to be determined, but a short circuit is likely to be the reason. Commenting on the incident, Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the cause of the fire will be determined as soon as possible.

“An unfortunate but small fire broke out at Kolkata airport near a check-in counter. In contact with the airport director – the situation is under control. Footage from the airport showed red flames and plumes of smoke billowing from the gantry. At least three fire engines arrived on the scene and the situation is under control, officials said.

“There was a small fire and smoke in the check-in area portal D at 21:12. and completely extinguished by 2140 pm. All passengers are safely evacuated and the check-in process is suspended due to the presence of smoke in the check-in area. Check-in and operation will resume at 10:15 PM,” Kolkata Airport tweeted.

Passengers have reportedly been evacuated from the departure check-in area as the entire airport is engulfed in smoke. No injuries or casualties were reported. “Because there was an influx of passengers, the airport authorities took no chances and used their firefighters to dose it. At the moment it is under control and the cooling process is in progress,” a police officer told PTI.

State Fire Minister Sujit Bose told PTI that his department had sent four fire engines to assist the Airports Authority Of India (AAI) in fighting the blaze. “Initially, it appears that a fault in the air conditioning system caused the fire. The exact reason behind it will become known after an investigation,” he said.
