'We're sorry,' says iconic cafe chain with 'best donuts' as store closes

An iconic cafe chain has left shoppers distraught after confirming the closure of a much-loved store.

Krispy Kreme has shuttered its Coney Street branch in York.

The store first opened in September 2017.

Commenting on the news on Facebook, a local shopper said: 'Well, this is Yorkshire.

“No one is going to pay £3 for a donut when you can get six for 89p.”

Another said: “[Krispy Kreme doughnuts] are beautiful and worth the price, but the store was too small.”

“The rates are too expensive even for Krispy Kreme,” said a third customer.

Krispy Kreme UK currently has over 120 branches.

The brand also operated 1,100 retail units in retail partner stores including Tesco, Morrisons, Costco and Center Parcs stores across the country.

A spokesperson for Krispy Kreme UK & Ireland said: “We regularly review our locations and plan to open a further 15 stores across the UK and Ireland this year.

“While we are sorry to have to close our store in central York, we can reassure our many loyal fans in the region that they can still pick up our delicious Original Glazed and many other Krispy Kreme flavors from our cupboards in their local Asda, Sainsbury's. and Tesco, or visit our store in York Designer Village.”

Krispy Kreme has not yet announced where the new stores will be located.

In November, the bakery chain gave away more than 60,000 original glazed donuts for free to mark World Kindness Day.

Why are retailers closing their stores?
