MANCHESTER UNITED are sweating on Luke Shaw's fitness after Erik ten Hag confirmed the star had “complaints” before being sent off against Aston Villa.

The Red Devils were leading 1-0 at halftime thanks to Rasmus Hojlund's goal when the blow fell.

But United, who secured a 2-1 win late on thanks to Scott McTominay, were forced into a reshuffle at half-time when Shaw had to be taken off the field just two weeks after returning from injury.

And Ten Hag announced afterwards that Shaw was not feeling physically well towards the end of the first period, so he decided not to take any more risks with him.

The Dutchman said: “Precaution.

“He had some complaints and we cannot take any risks with him because he has had injuries in the past. We'll have to see how it goes in the coming days.

“It's not an advantage to lose him, everyone knows my philosophy of having left-footers at the left center back and at the left back. We have to make compromises and that is not to our advantage.”

Victor Lindelof, who is more used to playing on the right, replaced the ex-Southampton man at left-back.

The 28-year-old Shaw suffered an injury for the first time in the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on August 19.

He subsequently did not play for more than three months due to what was described as a serious thigh muscle injury.

Although the defender returned to the first team at the end of November, he suffered further misery two days before Christmas.

He then missed the rest of the festive period due to a muscle problem.

Shaw returned to action in the 4-2 FA Cup win at Newport County on January 28 and has since started in the wins over Wolves and West Ham.

Another possible spell for him adds to Ten Hag's injury problems.

Fellow full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed the trip to Villa.

The 26-year-old has been plagued by injuries this season and picked up a problem before United won the FA Cup against Newport County.

Wan-Bissaka subsequently missed the Red Devils' wins over Wolves and West Ham in the league but returned to training this week.

However, Ten Hag announced on Thursday that the wing defender had to withdraw from training.

He lost centre-back Lisandro Martinez during his side's 3-0 win over West Ham last weekend.

Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia are also out for United due to injury.
