  • Luxury bodybuilder Clive Sutton is converting London’s new electric taxis
  • The conversions offer luxurious interiors, but don’t command attention like large SUVs

This is the electric VIP taxi that offers the comfort of a private jet in a vehicle already common on the roads of the capital.

Celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Kate Moss and Noel Edmonds have all owned former black London cabs because of the anonymity the vehicles provide when touring the city.

However, luxury car retailer and renowned coachbuilder Clive Sutton is offering new customers the chance to own a bespoke electric taxi.

They turn the practical people carrier into a luxury city cruiser for £141,331.25, with a full range of upgrades.

This puts the LEVC VIP taxi in a similar price range to the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Range Rover – without raising the ire of environmentalists and those against the use of gas guzzlers in the city.

Outside, unless the owner decides on a custom paint job, the vehicle will look the same as other London taxis, apart from the lack of a taxi sign at the rear.

Owners will also have the option to have the yellow taxi light removed.

Inside is where the real transformation takes place, with a wide range of options.

Owners can choose to replace the standard, functional layout with luxurious club seating similar in style to a private jet.

Instead of three seats in a row facing forward, affluent owners can equip their limousine with just two seats and a center console, with cup holders and controls for the climate control system.

Other options include two rear-facing jump seats and an additional center console.

It is not surprising that the LEVC VIP taxi has an advanced audiovisual system with built-in WiFi.

Although the WiFi isn’t necessarily just for working on the road, as for £750 the Clive Sutton will install a PlayStation 5 or an X-Box in the vehicle, offering the chance to play Call of Duty while stuck on the Marylebone Road .

Unfortunately, despite being based on the iconic London taxi, the owners will not be able to use bus lanes or taxi ranks as they will not be registered as public service vehicles. If it sneaks into a bus lane, the owner can be fined.

Another option is ‘electric rear door closing’.

For £9,075 the new owner can get into the taxi and sit while the driver presses a button to close the door automatically.

According to the spokesperson: “Our passionate team of visionary engineers and stylists have more than 20 years of experience building custom luxury passenger cars.

‘Having lived in London during that time, it is an honor to work on designing and building the brand new Sutton VIP Class LEVC.

‘Currently in production is an awe-inspiring and totally unique London Taxi conversion, built to last and completely suitable for everyday use.

‘Clive Sutton is the exclusive creator of the LEVC Sutton VIP Class, a bespoke taxi with a completely redesigned interior, with the rear seat shortened and angled for comfort. Options include individual power chairs and folding tables.

‘The driver’s compartment and VIP passenger compartment are separated by a slimmed-down screen with a media monitor powered by Apple TV and even a Sony PS5 gaming console.

‘Between the rear passengers is a new luxurious armrest complete with cup holders, and behind it a refrigerator. The interior is as high-tech as it is luxurious, with ambient lighting and an upgraded stereo system.

‘A subtle but distinctive ‘two-tone’ exterior paint finish is usually used for the exterior; the iconic black taxi paint for the lower parts and a sublime Grigio Silverstone. Customers can choose from a wide range of colors and finishes.”
