A truck fire has closed part of a busy Sydney highway, causing significant delays.

Emergency services were called to the fire on the M5 East at Kingsgrove in the south of the city just before 11am on Friday.

The highway is closed westbound at Kingsgrove Rd, with two lanes into the city closed for 40 minutes as emergency services deal with the incident.

Footage from the scene showed an intense fire engulfing the truck’s cabin, with the fuel tanks apparently exploding as traffic passed by.

‘The call came at 10.53am [on the] south-west highway just west of Kingsgrove Road,” a spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue told Daily Mail Australia.

“There was a fire in a truck, they put it out… now they’re just siphoning the fuel.”

All eastbound lanes opened just before noon, but westbound lanes remained closed and traffic was diverted to local suburban roads.

‘Traffic is very slow in both directions,’ warned NSW Traffic Alerts on X. ‘Continue to allow extra time and expect delays. A detour remains in place via the King Georges Rd exit.

‘The fire is out [but] Cleaning and recovery work must take place.’
