Man drowns while diving with friends on King Island in Tasmania

A man has drowned while diving with friends on King Island in Tasmania.

The 43-year-old man, who was believed to be engaged in a freediving session, got into trouble shortly before 11:30 am on Sunday.

Police and emergency services were called to Johnson Rock in Currie on the island’s west coast.

The man visited the area from the highway and was pulled from the water by his friends and resuscitated. He could not be resuscitated and died at the scene.

King Island is popular with divers and has several dive sites and wrecks. It is located in the Bass Strait on the northwestern tip of Tasmania.

The diver is at least the 43rd person to drown in Australian waters this summer, which is five more than at the same time in 2023.
