‘Thank you for everything you do Martin. Enjoy a well-deserved loving time with family and see you on the other side ❤️.’

His departure over the festive period comes shortly after the financial journalist urged the public not to feel obliged to buy Christmas presents this year, especially those struggling with the cost of living amid the cost of living crisis.

Martin emphasized that Christmas is just one day and you should spend it with your loved ones, rather than fearing the ‘financial hangover’ afterwards.

He told Times radio: ‘Many people will know that I have been campaigning for years to ban unnecessary gifts – that’s not the gifts under the tree or your partner, that’s that ever-growing list of family, friends, teachers that we feel obliged to to buy.

He added: ‘Teachers are doing a fantastic job, but perhaps they need a collective gift from everyone in the class.’
