Anyone who is entitled to a state pension and is also ill or disabled can receive the money as part of a social assistance benefit.

Speaking on the final of the Martin Lewis Money Show on Tuesday, Martin explained that the money was there to cushion the pressure from those paying for help.

But not all of them are aware that they can get support.

He said: 'There may be £3,500 available for disabled or ill pensioners.

'So 1.1 million of them miss out on the attendance allowance.

“This will cover the costs of those who need help, even if you don't get help.”

The assistance is not income-related. If you do not have a low income, you may still be entitled to it.

The lower rate available to those who need it is £68 per week, which works out to £3,540 per year.

Martin explained that this is for someone who only needs help during the day or at night, not both.

While if you need help during the day and night, you could be entitled to the higher rate of £102 per week, which works out to £5,300 for the year.

'It's a no-brainer,' says Martin Lewis as he reveals an 'easy win' way to cut energy bills with swaps

Unfortunately, if you only have one year left to live, you can receive the higher amount per week.

He also explained tonight that every Briton could save thousands of pounds by carrying out a three-second check.

the expert urged anyone who has regular and recurring payments leaving their account to double-check them.

He said payments “trickle down our accounts” and most of the time we don't even realize it – which is useful for bills, but not for all transactions.

Requirements for entitlement to cash

To receive the weekly payments, you must have:

  • Needed assistance or supervision for six consecutive months
  • Get help with daily life
  • Need supervision to ensure you are not a danger to yourself or others

But sometimes outgoing payments can have an error and if you don't check it, you can suffer huge losses.

Martin said: 'The nice thing about regular payments is that we spend our money, but we don't do it consciously.

“It's happening behind our backs, but if you don't check them regularly, millions of people are paying for things they don't want and things they don't need.”
