Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the latest batch Scream films, then denied that Barrera’s pro-Palestine comments prompted her to leave.
“Spyglass’ position is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or incitement to hatred in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust, or anything that blatantly crosses the line into hate speech ,” the company statement said. .
Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in the slasher franchise, publicly addressed the situation a day later via her Instagram Story, writing: “First and foremost, I condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn any form of hatred and prejudice against any group of people.”
In her statement on social media, Barrera noted that she felt a “responsibility” to speak out.
“As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel a responsibility to have a platform that gives me the privilege of being heard, and that is why I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and care about to lend my voice to those in need,” she continued. “Every person on this earth – regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status – deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom.”
Deadline reported this later Jenna Ortega will not reprise her role as Tara Carpenter due to her filming schedule for Season 2 of Netflix’s Wednesday.
