The ones inside Newcastle and the rest of the North-East were the biggest culprits, with 86 percent leaving rubbish behind in recently vacated properties.

The North West was the second worst offender at 78 percent, followed by the West Midlands at 77 percent.

The tidiest region was the east of England Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Landlords there were only left with a mess for 49 percent of their departing tenants.

Sharon Ford, 45, from Newcastle, calls hubby Ian “Mr Messy”.

She said: “Whatever room he is in, he will leave it in a state.

“There are towels and pants on the floor in the bathroom, magazines, books in the bedroom and dirty dishes in the living room.

“Don’t get me started on the kitchen or the garden, they’re even worse after he’s been there.”

A spokesperson for Direct Line Business Insurance, which commissioned the poll, said: “Renters in the North East were the worst at leaving belongings behind.”
