The moment a drunk driver drove onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into an oncoming car on New Year's Day has been captured on video.

Gruesome footage shows Djiferson Monteiro's Ford Fiesta veering dangerously into the other lane after he fell asleep at the wheel.

After narrowly avoiding two cars, his Fiesta crashes into the side of an oncoming red Volkswagen Golf.

The innocent driver tried to avoid him by swerving to the grass verge, but was hit head-on and suffered a broken hand and wrist.

When Monteiro was asked his name and age, he could barely speak, slurring his words and initially misinterpreting his age.

After providing a roadside breath sample, Monteiro blew 109 – more than three times the legal limit of 35.

Monteiro claimed to officers that he had only had one beer that day and checks later revealed that he was not even on the car's insurance policy.

Footage shows the 35-year-old driving in front of a motorcycle, whose dashcam was used as evidence after the crash on New Year's Day 2023.

Monteiro was driving along Boongate in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, when he started to drive into oncoming traffic.

A police officer on duty, a few cars behind the crash, went to help the drivers before calling for help.

Incredibly, after the crash, Monteiro made no attempt to get out of his car, did not check on the other driver and had difficulty interacting with officers.

Instead, he sat perfectly still, was completely still, and seemed to be in a stupor.

He had to say his name four times before the police officer heard him and when asked his age, he mumbled something inaudible.

The officer at first thought he said 25 before adding, “35.”

He then failed a breath test and was arrested before being taken to Peterborough City Hospital as a precaution.

Monteiro was required to provide a blood sample to check his alcohol levels, which he refused, and he was charged with failing to provide a sample for analysis.

Monteiro, from Thorney, Cambridgeshire, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday, January 18, where he pleaded guilty to failing to provide a blood sample for analysis, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison, of which eighteen months were suspended.

He was disqualified from driving for two years and must resit a test, as well as a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) and 120 hours of unpaid work.

PC Guy Cunningham, who investigated for Cambridgeshire Police, said: 'Drink driving is a serious problem that police are continuing to tackle to make roads safer.

'Getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks is selfish and puts not only yourself but also other road users at risk. It's not worth the risk, make sure you have alternative transportation if you drink alcohol.'
