May December is a film about a couple struggling under the weight of their age difference, inspired by the story of Mary Kay Letourneau’s infamous affair with her student Vili Fualaauwho was 22 years younger than her.

According to the synopsis, the film picks up years after an infamous romance between Gracie (Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton) held the nation in its grip. The couple, who have a 23-year age difference, are getting ready to send their children off to college when Elizabeth (Portman) comes to town in preparation for a new movie based on the couple. The actress begins to investigate Gracie and Joe, causing their dynamic to fall apart as Joe comes to terms with what happened in his childhood.

May December found initial success at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 to a six-minute standing ovation. Netflix acquired the film and gave it a wider release in theaters and streaming.

Before the film became available to a wider audience, director Todd Haynes discussed bringing the project to life in less than a month.

“It was very important for Natalie and Julie to spend time together because Julie’s character had to develop a kind of physical type that Natalie’s character had to imitate over the course of the film. That put a huge additional burden on Julianne to figure out who Gracie was very quickly,” he shared The Hollywood Reporter that same month. “We really did our best for that [have] just time spent socially with Julianne and Charles and the two main kids who were in the movie. All the while, just sitting around and talking helped. We didn’t really have as much time to literally work through scenes in the room or go over the script as we would have liked.
