Netflix fans are outraged by the new apocalyptic thriller’s ‘unsatisfying’ cliffhanger ending, while others claim they missed the point: ‘Where’s the rest of the movie?!’

Netflix’s latest apocalyptic thriller has divided viewers with its unique cliffhanger ending, with some complaining it was “unsatisfying” while others praised it as thought-provoking.

Leave The World Behind with Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali, Myha’la Herrol as two vacationing families fighting for survival amid a global catastrophe.

What is initially presented as a massive wave of cyber attacks in the US turns out to be something much more sinister, with even the island’s deer acting out by surrounding the holiday home and staring at the residents.

The film is based on the 2020 book of the same name by Rumaan Alam, directed by Sam Esmail and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground.

The 2 hour and 20 minute feature is currently rated ‘certified fresh’ Rotten tomatoes critics score 74 percent, with a viewership rating of 83 percent.

Following its release on streaming platform Netflix on Friday, viewers have taken to social media to praise the film’s performances, cinematography and tone.

However, many have complained that the film is spoiled by the ‘arbitrary’ and ‘terrible’ ending, complaining that the film ‘doesn’t deliver’ and is wasting their time.

One person furious: Who decided to end, leave the world behind like this?? I just want to talk to them alone… @netflix figure it out,” while a second said: “I just watched Leave The World Behind.. They ran out of money for the end of the movie?! Foreign.’

Another echoed: ‘Leave the World Behind just messed with my head, why would they end with the biggest cliffhanger,’ while a fourth added: ‘There’s two hours I’ll never get back. Horrible ending. Unlikely characters. Netflix trash’.

A fifth viewer wrote: ‘Leave The World Behind is strange. Enjoyed the acting, it’s well shot and looks great. The structure is so good that it keeps adding layers and layers of mystery. Until it reaches the end, where it has built up to literally nothing, and has essentially produced no results at all.”

A sixth added: “I really need to know what the producers of Leave the World Behind were thinking when they came up with that ending?” while a seventh said: ‘Leave the World Behind left me just as badly off. Where’s the rest of the movie?!”

Someone else tweeted: ‘Who else saw “Leave the World Behind” starring Julia Roberts released today and was on the edge of your seat during the chilling thriller but then was absolutely disgusted by the way they ended the movie !’

While a ninth wrote: ‘These government conspiracy films always end with an open ending. Leave the World Behind was a great watch, but man, that ending was unsatisfying.”

A tenth said: ‘I’m done with Netflix because why would you end Leave the World Behind like this?’, while another said: ‘I think my Netflix is ​​broken why would Leave the World Behind end like this?!?’

Another person wrote, “So I watched Leave the World Behind, and for the most part it was a damn good movie. However, the ending was completely unsatisfactory. I was sitting there thinking that I had wasted damn near two and a half hours being fully invested in this, and that’s how it ended?’

And one viewer raged: ‘Leave the World Behind has to have the worst ending of any movie I’ve ever seen… it was such a super stupid movie until that ending, yeah.’

However, other fans took to Twitter to explain that people had missed the entire point of the ending, and that it was a conscious choice with a deeper meaning behind it, advising viewers to “take notes.”

One person praised, “Leave the World Behind is a pretty good movie overall. The ending is no joke, the five best endings of all time. That was a brilliant part of the filmmaking.”

Another agreed, writing: ‘LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND has one of the best endings of any film this year. I’ll leave it at that.’

A third wrote: “Don’t worry about the ending of ‘Leave the World Behind’ and pay attention to what’s being said.”

While a fourth wrote: “People who don’t get the ending of ‘Leave The World Behind’ on Netflix are going to have a really hard time watching the classic ‘Planet Of The Apes’.”

Someone else said: ‘I just watched Leave the World Behind on Netflix. Quite a good movie, especially the ending! while a sixth added: ‘My favorite part of Leave The World Behind is easily the ending.’

And a seventh commented: ‘The fact that everyone is angry about that ending from the movie Leave The World Behind instead of actually LISTENING to what could possibly happen in our future as a reality is the real disappointment here. Instead of getting angry, people should really take notes.”

Speaking of the ending, Leave the World Behind author Rumaan said he found it “so satisfying and so rewarding” that it ends with “that singular jolt of humor” that director Sam does so well.

He told Variety: ‘It’s a kind of self-reflection because he’s a filmmaker. He has also worked in television and makes a claim about the power of that medium and its hold on this one character.

“I say it’s funny, but I don’t think it’s a joke. I don’t think it’s a joke with Rose. I don’t think it’s a joke to the audience. I don’t think it’s a joke on Friends.

‘It reminds us that art is a kind of ointment. The theatrical experience of watching this film is so powerful because I’ve had the opportunity to see the audience react to the ending three times now, and no one really knows what to make of it.

‘They say: is this funny? Is this scary? Is it really over? And I like that so much.’
