TAIWO AWONIYI held his nerve to power home the winning penalty as Forest defeated the Robins in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

But it was Matt Turner, the star-studded stopper who came to the rescue and visited Manchester United in the fifth round.

The American star's stunning save from Sam Bell was enough for Forest to come out on top as he dived to his left to clear the ball to safety.

It was a timely reminder to boss Nuno Espirito Santo about Turner's quality after signing Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels from Salzburg during the January transfer window.

After knocking out West Ham in the third round, the Robins attempted to knock out more than one top team for the first time in over a century.

However, their chances of making history suffered an early blow as Forest raced ahead.

Santo's men were there from the start and skipper Morgan Gibbs-White brought out the best in City No1 Max O'Leary with a rocket shot saved low to his right.

Anthony Elanga's attempt was then deflected for a corner, which the visitors were unable to defend.

Gibbs-White delivered a laser-sharp cross which rose to Felipe's head and the ball appeared to deflect off Divock Origi at the front post, leaving O'Leary helpless.

Felipe's acrobatic forward somersault suggested the defender thought he had scored, but it was Origi who took credit – after a VAR handball check – for his helpful push of the ball over the line.

It was Origi's first Forest goal and ironically he wouldn't have been there to score if Chris Wood hadn't adjusted his hamstring against Arsenal.

Forest were on the verge of flogging the former Liverpool striker to the MLS, where a pair of clubs, led by Los Angeles FC, were ready to take him off their hands.

But fate had given the 28-year-old Belgian a second chance and he made the most of it.

However, Forest have been particularly weak this season and failed to capitalize on their lead.

City were undeterred by the loss of that early goal and hit back six minutes later.

Former Leicester midfielder Andy King was given far too much time and space by Forest's retreating three and let it fly from 25 yards.

Turner threw himself to his left and managed to send the ball flying off both posts with his fingertips.

However, Forest's reprieve was short-lived as Bell pounced on the loose ball and crossed over to Jason Knight to steer the ball home from seven yards.

It was a particularly fine moment for the former Derby County favorite to score at the home of his former bitter rivals.

He almost doubled his tally with a snap that was deflected for a corner before Turner pushed away Anis Mehmet's effort.

Forest looked happy to reach half-time on even terms and continued to deal heavily with their Championship opponents after the break.

Robins' head coach Liam Manning made a three-way change on the hour mark, with Matty James, Harry Cornick and George Tanner replacing King, goalscorer Knight and Haydon Roberts.

And Forest fans were soon given a rare chance to cheer when Nuno sent on cult hero Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi for Cheikhou Kouyate and Elanga just minutes later.

Suddenly Forest had a goal with their play and Origi flashed a distance from 25 yards wide after Awoniyi set him up.

Gibbs-White and Montiel also tried their luck from long range, without success as Forest City held back.

Substitute Nuno Tavares at least hit the target with a drawn volley, which O'Leary punched away before Neco Williams flashed a shot inches wide as the tie went into extra time.

Mehmeti and Bell's efforts were saved by Turner as the Robins rallied and Nahki Wells was blocked on the line by Moussa Niakhate as he tried to force Bell's low cross.

But when Cornick fired a last-gasp shot wide, the tie was destined to be decided by penalties, with the second-string side losing.
